Hannah, 25 - Head of Growth

I look after new product features, digital ads, emails, social media, all communications, and the conversations with people who use our app. Working at a startup, means I spend a lot of time talking to developers and designers coming up with fun ideas and I spend the rest of the time deep in numbers and spreadsheets trying to work out why things are happening the way they are.

How I got to where I am now

I picked a low contact time Business course so that I could be funded to move cities and whilst studying, I threw parties and gigs, managed the recording of national tours, and ended up working at a record label before I got involved in music apps.

Across my eight years in London, I have gone from Event Manager to Marketing Executive to Product Marketing Manager to Head of Marketing

Now, I look after Growth at an audio-journalism app

My big tip...

At the end of my Upper Sixth year, I changed my mind about what I wanted to do. I had been putting on gigs in Manchester for a couple of years and I wanted to pursue a path in live music and touring. I said goodbye to my plans to study Law and moved down to London. The rest has happened because I found opportunities. It was pretty awesome finding out about the world of startups and that there is another world beyond the corporate ladder. University isn't the be-all and end-all. If you think it's too expensive or think it might not be the right option for you - that's okay. I have never been asked (absolutely never) whether or not I have a university degree. If you decide to go to university, leverage your time and get as much external experience as possible.
